STALKER ED 5-40×56

INTRODUCTION
Just a few years ago, a riflescope offering a maximum magnification of 20 or 25× already seemed more than sufficient for most shooting disciplines. Things have changed considerably since then. 5-25× scopes have become almost commonplace, 30× models are increasingly widespread, and we are now seeing optics capable of reaching 35, 40× or even more. On a long-range rifle resting on a bipod, the appeal is easy to understand. But when it comes to airsoft sniping, where our engagements rarely exceed 80 or 100 metres, one question inevitably arises: what practical purpose can 40× magnification really serve?
That is precisely the question I asked myself when testing this Marcool STALKER ED 5-40×56 HY1650. On paper, the specifications certainly do not do things by halves: 5 to 40× magnification, a 56 mm objective lens, 34 mm tube, MAR-206 first focal plane reticle, ED glass, parallax adjustment and a Zero Stop system. All this comes at around the €500 mark, which is starting to represent a significant investment for an airsoft optic, while remaining relatively affordable for a riflescope offering this level of specification.

Rather than spending endless hours shooting from a bench in an attempt to artificially find a purpose for it, I chose to use the scope in a much more revealing environment: first during a training session and then in a competition in Switzerland, where target acquisition speed, terrain reading and precision ultimately matter far more than the number printed on the magnification ring. It was an excellent opportunity to find out whether this enormous 5-40× range represents a genuine advantage or is simply an attractive figure on a specification sheet.
A STALKER THAT HAS COME A LONG WAY
Marcool is certainly not an unfamiliar name on Sniperland. I had already tested a STALKER several years ago and came away with very positive memories, particularly regarding its brightness and the finesse of its reticle. The Chinese manufacturer has considerably developed its range since then, and this HY1650 perfectly illustrates how far the brand has come. We are no longer looking at a relatively simple optic primarily designed to offer excellent value for money, but at a riflescope incorporating most of the features now expected from a modern precision-shooting optic.
The STALKER ED 5-40×56 uses a 34 mm tube combined with a substantial 56 mm objective lens. The MAR-206 reticle sits in the first focal plane, adjustments are made in 0.1 MIL increments, and the parallax adjustment officially starts at 10 yards and extends to infinity. The scope measures 360 mm and weighs 919 grams. Exit pupil ranges from 8.5 mm at low magnification to just 1.4 mm at 40×. As we will see later, that last figure has a considerable influence on the behaviour of the scope when the magnification is pushed all the way to its limit.
On paper, Marcool is clearly not trying to offer a small, lightweight and highly versatile riflescope. The STALKER is a genuine precision optic, with all that this implies in terms of diameter, mechanics and weight. Surprisingly, however, once removed from the box and held in the hands, it feels less massive than its specifications might suggest.
A SERIOUS PIECE OF KIT, WITHOUT AN OVERDONE TACTICAL LOOK
First impressions are very positive. The HY1650 feels serious and immediately inspires confidence, but Marcool has wisely avoided turning its 5-40×56 into a caricature of a tactical riflescope. Despite the 56 mm objective and 34 mm tube, the lines remain relatively smooth and the overall design looks more like a competition shooter’s optic than a military scope. I particularly like this approach, which visually slims down what is still, undeniably, a substantial piece of equipment.

The proportions are well balanced and the various controls integrate nicely into the overall design. Once again, the impression is of a product designed for rested shooting or competition rather than something created simply to impress with oversized turrets and unnecessarily aggressive styling. This may seem completely secondary when discussing performance, but a riflescope is something you may keep for several years and handle constantly. Perceived quality and enjoyment of use therefore matter too.
The stated 919 grams may also sound intimidating. In practice, the scope feels considerably less cumbersome than that figure suggests. The weight appears well distributed and I never felt as though I were handling an anvil. Obviously, this is still a long way from a compact lightweight optic intended for a replica carried around all day, but for a 5-40×56 built around a 34 mm tube, the result remains perfectly coherent. On a precision- or competition-oriented setup, the weight caused me no particular issue.
SIMPLE AND PLEASANT CONTROLS
The turrets contribute greatly to this positive first impression. They are pleasant to operate, turn easily and the clicks remain sufficiently noticeable to know exactly what you are doing, without the excessively sharp feeling sometimes encountered on other optics. Each click represents 0.1 MIL, a value that has now become almost standard on riflescopes intended for precision shooting.

The arrangement of the two turrets is nevertheless worth mentioning. The elevation turret remains immediately accessible, while the windage turret is protected by a screw-on cap that must be removed before making an adjustment. Shooters who constantly dial windage may dislike this choice, but it makes perfect sense for the way I use a scope. Once zeroed, I very rarely touch the windage turret, and the cap prevents accidental changes during transport or handling in the field.

I did, however, make real use of the Zero Stop. This type of system can easily become just another line on a specification sheet when you mainly work with reticle holdovers, but here it proved particularly useful for avoiding confusion with my settings. After adjusting elevation, simply returning to the stop immediately restores the reference setting. In competition, where there are already enough things to think about without wondering whether you have made one turret revolution too many, that simplicity is genuinely appreciated.
THE MAR-206: FINENESS ABOVE ALL
The MAR-206 reticle is extremely fine. It is positioned in the first focal plane, so it naturally scales with magnification and its subtensions remain consistent regardless of the magnification being used. This is particularly useful for airsoft applications, where holdovers are common and the trajectories of heavy BBs can require significant corrections.

What really stands out between 5 and 15×, however, is just how fine it remains. The reticle is particularly precise and never unnecessarily obscures a small target. For a Golf Challenge type of event, where you may have to locate a small target in a complex environment before taking a precise shot, this finesse is a genuine advantage. It becomes very easy to position the centre of the reticle precisely while retaining an excellent view of everything happening around the target.
This quality is all the more appreciated because I barely used the illumination fitted to my sample. I naturally switched it on to check that it worked, but the conditions encountered during testing never really required it. On this type of scope, illumination is, in my opinion, mainly useful when ambient light drops significantly, particularly at dusk or when the reticle becomes difficult to distinguish against a very dark background. In normal daylight, the finesse and natural contrast of the MAR-206 are more than sufficient.
EXCELLENT BRIGHTNESS BETWEEN 5 AND 15×
A riflescope can offer every imaginable feature, but if the image quality is poor, everything else quickly becomes irrelevant. In this respect, the STALKER ED made an excellent impression throughout the magnification range I actually used. Between 5 and 15×, the image is very bright and provides an excellent view of the terrain. Combined with the fine reticle, this brightness immediately gives a strong feeling of precision and comfort.

This range is ultimately the one that best matches our type of shooting. At low magnification, there is enough field of view to locate a target quickly and understand its surroundings. Increasing magnification progressively to 10, 12 or 15× allows much more precise aiming without creating the impression of looking at the world through a narrow tube. The balance between magnification, brightness and ease of eye placement remains excellent.
The parallax adjustment also contributes to the overall comfort. I encountered no particular difficulty here: adjustment is easy and a clean image can be obtained quickly. Marcool states that the adjustment range starts at 10 yards, which is particularly useful for airsoft. Many scopes designed exclusively for long-range shooting become awkward when targets are very close; here, the ability to correctly adjust parallax at short distances helps make the scope considerably more versatile than its huge maximum magnification might suggest.
UP TO 20×: NO REAL PROBLEM
As magnification is increased further, the HY1650 remains perfectly comfortable up to around 20×. Naturally, the eye box progressively demands more precise positioning and the shooter’s movements become more noticeable, but nothing becomes genuinely troublesome. With a proper shooting position, the image remains easy to acquire and this magnification range can easily be used for rested shooting or for examining an area more closely.

However, we need to distinguish between what a riflescope is technically capable of doing and what we actually use in the field. During the Swiss competition, I never felt the need to work at 20, 30 or 40×. Most of my shots were taken between 8 and 12×, and there is an obvious reason for that. In this range, the field of view remains wide enough for rapid target acquisition, the image is bright, eye placement requires very little effort and the magnification is already more than sufficient to exploit the accuracy of an airsoft replica.
This is probably one of the most interesting lessons from the test. Owning a 5-40× riflescope absolutely does not mean you are going to shoot at 40×. In practice, the magnification range actually used remains far more reasonable and ultimately quite close to what I use on other precision optics.
30 AND 40×: WHERE RESTED SHOOTING CHANGES THE GAME
Obviously, having a riflescope capable of forty-power magnification immediately makes you want to turn the ring all the way up. So I did, mainly for the fun of it and to understand what such an enormous magnification could actually bring to our discipline. At 30× and then 40×, the behaviour changes dramatically. Eye placement becomes much more demanding, and at 40× you really have to find the correct position to maintain a complete image.

There is nothing surprising about this. At 40×, the exit pupil falls to just 1.4 mm. The slightest variation in head position immediately becomes noticeable and every movement of the shooter is considerably amplified in the image. For quickly engaging a target from an improvised position, the benefit therefore becomes highly questionable. But it would be unfair to conclude that 40× is useless: this magnification simply needs to be considered in the context of the type of shooting for which it actually makes sense.
On a real-steel rifle resting on a bipod, rear bag or benchrest support, the situation changes completely. The shooter no longer needs to acquire a target rapidly from an unstable position: the platform is supported, head position can be reproduced accurately and there is enough time to fine-tune parallax and focus. At very long range, a target that occupied only a small portion of the field of view at 10 or 15× becomes much easier to analyse. High magnification allows the shooter to refine the point of aim, work on a specific area of the target and, when atmospheric conditions permit, make better use of the mechanical accuracy of the rifle/ammunition combination.
However, magnification should not be confused with some magical ability to read a target hundreds of metres away. At these distances, glass quality, platform stability and, above all, atmospheric conditions become critical. Heat mirage, turbulence and available light can make 40× less useful than 25 or 30×. But having this reserve of magnification gives the shooter a choice. You can work at 20 or 25× when the air is moving heavily, then increase to 30, 35 or 40× when conditions allow. From this perspective, 40× is no longer a magnification that absolutely has to be used, but additional capability available when circumstances allow it to be exploited.

This is also where the philosophy behind the HY1650 becomes much clearer. Its 5-40× range should not be judged solely through the prism of airsoft. An optic like this can make perfect sense on a real-steel rifle intended for rested long- or very-long-range shooting, where its size and weight become much less problematic and its ability to reach very high magnification becomes considerably more relevant.
AN OBSERVATION CAPABILITY THAT SHOULD NOT BE UNDERESTIMATED
The other benefit of 30-40× became very apparent during testing: the HY1650 almost begins to act like a small spotting scope. By increasing the magnification, I was able to see impacts on the targets very easily and also examine the surrounding terrain to understand where some BBs were landing. In airsoft, this is ultimately far more useful than trying to shoot systematically at 40×.
This capability becomes even more relevant with real firearms. When shooting paper or steel targets at long range, being able to observe the results of a string without leaving the rifle is particularly convenient. A dedicated spotting scope obviously retains several advantages: it may have a larger objective lens, can be positioned independently from the rifle and allows a spotter to work without interfering with the shooter. Nevertheless, a 5-40×56 provides a particularly interesting intermediate solution. At certain distances and in good lighting conditions, it becomes possible to check impacts or examine a specific area of the target without carrying or setting up a second optic.
High magnification can also be useful before the shot is even taken. Closely examining a target, identifying a detail, studying its surroundings or simply checking something that is difficult to distinguish at 10× are all possible applications. On the Swiss course, this is ultimately how I naturally used 30 and 40×: I would shoot between 8 and 12×, then occasionally increase magnification to see exactly what had happened. The magnification ring would then return to a much more reasonable setting before shooting again.
This distinction between shooting magnification and observation magnification is, in my opinion, essential to understanding this riflescope. For my airsoft use, 8 to 12× is clearly the working range. 20× remains perfectly usable from a stable position. The 30-40× range is more of an observation reserve. On a supported real-steel rifle used at very long range, that boundary can naturally move upwards.
TESTED IN SWISS COMPETITION
A precision riflescope can perform extremely well from a shooting bench and become considerably less convincing as soon as you start changing positions, rapidly searching for targets or working under time pressure. This is why using the HY1650 during a training session and then in a competition in Switzerland was particularly interesting. This was no longer simply a matter of staring at a target for an afternoon, but actually using the optic when every second and every shot mattered.
During the Challenge, I mainly worked between 8 and 12×. This range proved perfectly suited to the task: enough magnification to exploit the precision of the reticle and clearly identify small targets, while retaining enough field of view and tolerance for rapid acquisition. This is also where the STALKER’s brightness is particularly enjoyable. The image is clear, the reticle remains fine and the entire optic quickly fades into the background.
This is an essential point. In competition, a good optic should not become another problem to manage. You should not spend your time searching for the image, fighting with parallax or trying to decipher an overly complicated reticle. Once my settings were established, the Marcool simply allowed me to concentrate on the targets and my shots. The Zero Stop also provided an additional degree of security by allowing me to return quickly to my reference setting without the risk of losing track.

The 30 and 40× settings were therefore almost never used for actual shooting during the competition. I occasionally used them out of curiosity and to observe impacts. This experience ultimately confirms something that is easy to forget when looking at a specification sheet: in a dynamic discipline, huge magnification can never replace a good balance between field of view, brightness, eye box and reticle precision.
40× IN AIRSOFT: MARKETING OR GENUINE USEFULNESS?
It would be easy to conclude that 40× magnification is pointless in airsoft. That would, however, be a little too simplistic. For taking a 60- or 80-metre shot from a competition position, I genuinely see no reason to use such a setting. Between 8 and 12×, I was much faster and perfectly capable of placing my shots precisely. Even 20× is already considerably more magnification than I need in most situations.
But a large precision riflescope is not simply a device for placing a point in the middle of a target. It is also an observation instrument. Seeing an impact, analysing a trajectory, examining the terrain surrounding a target or simply looking closely at a small area before reducing magnification to take the shot are all situations where this extra magnification becomes useful.
And once we step outside the airsoft world, the assessment changes again. On a real firearm used for rested shooting at several hundred metres, the stability of the position makes it possible to exploit magnification levels that would be completely counterproductive on a dynamic course. At that point, 30 or 40× can become a genuine tool for precision and analysis, provided atmospheric conditions allow it. A scope offering 40× does not mean that you must constantly shoot at 40×; it means that the shooter has that option when distance, target size and conditions make it relevant.
The real appeal of this Marcool is therefore less about the number 40 itself than the enormous flexibility provided by its magnification range. You have a scope that is genuinely usable from 5×, excellent in the 8-15× range that I use most often, still comfortable around 20×, and then capable of occasionally transforming into an observation tool or a very-high-magnification optic for rested shooting.
AN OPTIC AROUND €500: CAN WE STILL TALK ABOUT “VALUE FOR MONEY”?
At around €500, we are obviously no longer talking about a cheap airsoft scope bought simply to equip an occasional bolt-action replica. At this price, it is perfectly reasonable to be demanding about mechanics, image quality, the reticle and overall finish. The HY1650 broadly meets those expectations. It feels serious in the hands, the controls are pleasant, the Zero Stop genuinely works and, above all, the optical quality throughout the useful magnification range convinced me.

It is also interesting when looking at the evolution of the Asian optics market. For many years, Chinese brands were primarily considered economical alternatives to established European, American or Japanese manufacturers. That distinction is becoming increasingly blurred. Prices are rising, certainly, but performance is improving as well. A 34 mm tube, ED glass, FFP reticle, MIL-based adjustments, Zero Stop and an enormous magnification range are no longer features reserved exclusively for optics costing well over €1,000.
This obviously does not mean that a €500 Marcool automatically becomes the equivalent of a high-end scope costing three or four times as much. The final few percent of optical quality, mechanical perfection, consistency of production and long-term support also have value. But the performance gap that can actually be perceived in the field is narrowing, and that is probably what makes products such as this STALKER so interesting today.
A FEW AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT
The main weakness of the HY1650 is, paradoxically, written directly in its name. Forty-power magnification sounds impressive, but it brings physical constraints that simply cannot be avoided. With an exit pupil of only 1.4 mm, the eye box inevitably becomes demanding and dynamic use at this magnification is genuinely difficult. This extreme end of the range should therefore be considered an observation capability or a tool for extremely stable shooting, rather than the normal operating magnification of the scope.
The capped windage turret is another design choice that will probably divide users. Personally, it does not bother me at all because I set my windage and then work mainly with the reticle. A shooter accustomed to regularly dialing wind corrections directly on the turret will probably prefer an immediately accessible control.

Finally, despite the excellent distribution of its mass, 919 grams is still 919 grams. On a platform dedicated to precision shooting, this causes no particular problem and the scope even feels surprisingly reasonable when held in the hands. On an ultra-lightweight replica intended to be carried throughout an entire day, however, choosing a 5-40×56 obviously deserves more consideration.
WHO IS IT FOR?
The Marcool STALKER ED 5-40×56 HY1650 is probably not the scope I would recommend to someone who has just bought their first bolt-action replica and simply wants an optic for casual Sunday games. It would objectively be overkill for that purpose. On the other hand, it makes considerably more sense on a high-end setup intended for Golf Challenge events, precision airsoft shooting, benchrest, airgun use or rested long-range shooting with real firearms.
Its real appeal lies less in the impressive 40× figure than in its ability to cover an enormous range of situations with a single optic. At 8-12×, it proved perfectly suited to my competition use. At 15-20×, it remains comfortable enough for observation or extremely precise shooting. Beyond that, it progressively starts to behave like a small spotting scope mounted directly on the platform. On a stabilised real-steel rifle intended for long- or very-long-range shooting, this additional magnification reserve can become a genuine extra capability.
That versatility is ultimately what best defines the HY1650. A big scope, certainly, but a surprisingly civilised one.

CONCLUSION
The Marcool STALKER ED 5-40×56 HY1650 impresses with its specifications, but ultimately it was not the 40× magnification that convinced me most. In the field, it proved most effective between 8 and 12×, with a bright image, a remarkably fine reticle and very natural handling. Up to around 20× it remains comfortable; beyond that, it becomes a genuine observation tool, while rested real-steel shooting at very long range gives this additional magnification considerably more purpose. The Zero Stop, build quality and pleasant mechanics complete a very serious package. At around €500, Marcool therefore offers a genuine shooter’s optic, capable of moving from sensible dynamic use to observation or high-magnification rested shooting.
