Marcool HY3520: Testing an Electronic Anti-Cant Level for Airsoft and PRS
Some accessories immediately make sense, while others are initially met with a fair amount of skepticism. For the uninitiated, an electronic anti-cant level fitted to an airsoft rifle can easily fall into the second category.
The answer, however, is yes — and probably more so than you might expect.
I had the opportunity to test the Marcool HY3520 Electronic Anti-Cant Level, a compact electronic module designed to monitor rifle cant in real time. On paper, the concept is extremely simple. In the field, and especially under competition conditions, it proved every bit as useful as I expected. And for once, the explanation does not come solely from the world of precision shooting: it is directly linked to one of the fundamental characteristics of airsoft — the hop-up.
Cant: A Few Degrees Can Make a Difference
Cant is simply the lateral inclination of the rifle. When you shoulder it, the rifle may feel perfectly vertical while actually leaning slightly to the left or right. From a comfortable, stable shooting position, this is relatively easy to control. But once you start shooting from a barricade, an improvised support, kneeling, prone on uneven ground, or simply under time pressure, our perception becomes far less reliable.
In long-range shooting, the issue is well known: a canted rifle no longer maintains exactly the same relationship between the bore axis, the optic and gravity. The greater the distance, the more significant the resulting error becomes. For the airsoft sniper, however, there is an additional factor to consider.
The Hop-Up Changes the Equation
An airsoft BB obviously does not share the same external ballistics as a conventional projectile. To achieve the ranges we now take for granted, airsoft relies on the hop-up system. The hop-up bucking applies backspin to the BB, generating the Magnus effect and producing an aerodynamic force that partially counters gravity and allows the BB to remain in flight for considerably longer.
As long as the rifle remains vertical, everything works as intended. Tilt the rifle, however, and you also tilt the axis of rotation applied to the BB. The force generated by the Magnus effect is no longer acting purely in the vertical plane: a lateral component appears and the trajectory begins to curve either left or right. Anyone who has deliberately fired an airsoft rifle at a pronounced angle will have seen the effect firsthand. With enough hop, a BB can quite literally be made to curve through the air.
We are obviously not talking about canting a bolt-action rifle by 30 degrees. The Marcool is intended to identify the small errors that the eye — or our own perception of body position — may not necessarily notice. At 30 metres on a man-sized target, a slight degree of cant will generally make little difference. But when shooting at 60, 70 or 80 metres with heavy BBs, substantial hop and small targets, the entire objective is to remove as many variables as possible: wind, BB consistency, power output, hop setting, range estimation, holdovers…
Small, and Above All, Simple
The Marcool module is a compact electronic unit measuring just 40 × 24 × 15 mm and mounts directly onto a Picatinny rail. It uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and features a small OLED display with three brightness levels. The display automatically changes orientation depending on how the unit is installed: horizontally, vertically or even upside down.

This mounting flexibility is useful in practice. Depending on the scope, mount and available rail space, it is not always possible to position an accessory exactly where you would ideally want it. With the HY3520, the main requirement is simply to find a location where the indication remains visible without forcing you to completely break your sight picture.
Its main advantage, however, comes down to three colours: blue, green and red.
There is no angular value to interpret while shooting and no tiny bubble to search for beside the scope. Cant the rifle to the left and the display turns blue. Bring it within the acceptable range and it turns green. Cant it to the right and it turns red. The manual specifies approximately 1° of sensitivity either side of zero, resulting in a total green window of around 2°.
Correct the rifle slightly until the display turns green, then take the shot. That is all there is to it.
And that is precisely what I appreciate about this type of accessory: the information is instantly understandable and eventually becomes something you can register almost subconsciously through peripheral vision.
Two Functions in One Compact Unit
The HY3520 offers two operating modes. Horizon Level Mode is the one that interests us most in the field: mounted on the rifle, it monitors cant during the firing sequence.

The second, Electronic Level Mode, turns the Marcool into a conventional electronic level for scope installation. It can, for example, be placed on top of the elevation turret while mounting the optic to check that everything is correctly levelled.

This second function is far from pointless. Many of us have spent far too much time installing a scope, checking the reticle, slightly loosening the rings, adjusting everything again and then finally getting behind the rifle only to wonder whether the whole setup is genuinely square. The same small device can therefore be used during scope installation and then remain permanently fitted to the rifle to monitor cant while shooting.

A User Manual That Almost Fits on a Post-it
Operating the Marcool is every bit as straightforward as the product itself.
Power on / off: long press on the button.
Brightness: a short press cycles through the three OLED brightness levels.
Mode selection: a long press switches between Horizon Level Mode and Electronic Level Mode.
Horizon Level Mode: anti-cant operation using the blue / green / red indication.
Electronic Level Mode: conventional electronic level operation, particularly useful when installing an optic.
Electronic calibration: once the rifle or reference surface is completely stable and correctly levelled, a double-click allows the user to manually define the reference point. A triple-click restores the factory settings.
Once installed and calibrated, there is virtually nothing else to do. And that is exactly how it should be: an accessory designed to save time during a firing sequence should not waste that time by burying the shooter in menus.
Off to the 2026 Sniper Swiss Challenge
Rather than simply fitting the Marcool to a rifle and casually firing a few BBs to see whether it worked, I decided to use it in a far more revealing environment: the 2026 SSC in Switzerland.
Competition is probably one of the best environments in which to understand the real value of an anti-cant device. Shooting positions are not always natural, supports are not always ideal and, above all, the clock is running. Under these conditions, one thing quickly becomes obvious: we are far less capable than we think of judging whether a rifle is genuinely vertical.
On several positions, I would happily have considered my chassis perfectly upright while the Marcool was still showing a slight degree of cant. A small correction of the wrist was enough to bring the display back to green. No need to think about it, and no need to search for a tiny bubble mounted beside the scope: blue, green or red, the information is instantly usable.
A Few Valuable Seconds
This is ultimately the aspect that convinced me most. The module obviously does not make a rifle inherently more accurate. It cannot compensate for wind, adjust your hop-up or turn a poor range estimate into a hit. It simply removes one variable from the equation — and in competition, that already counts for a great deal.
When time is not an issue, checking a conventional bubble level is hardly a problem. Under time pressure, however, every additional task adds to the workload: identify the target, establish the shooting position, shoulder the rifle, locate the target through the optic, adjust parallax or magnification if required, apply the correct hold, control breathing…
Adding another conscious check of the rifle’s vertical alignment is not necessarily desirable.

With the Marcool, the check gradually becomes peripheral. Green? Shoot. Blue or red? Make a small correction and shoot. As the stages progressed, I found myself looking at the unit less and less consciously.
Battery Life: A Full Day, but Keep It in Mind
Another lesson from the SSC concerned battery life. The Marcool was switched on at around 8:30 a.m. and remained in operation almost continuously until approximately 5:00 p.m. It is therefore capable of covering a full and demanding competition day in continuous use.
It is nevertheless something worth keeping in mind. During a particularly long competition, or an event spread across several days, it makes sense to switch the unit off between sessions and during extended breaks. The system is simple enough that doing so never really becomes an inconvenience.
Accuracy Test: When Four Levels Do Not Agree on What “Level” Means
Being fairly technically minded, I wanted to compare the Marcool against a purely physical reference: the good old-fashioned bubble level. This is where things became considerably more interesting than expected.
To my surprise, four different bubble levels positioned on different parts of the setup did not give exactly the same reading.
The explanation is relatively simple: every mechanical interface can introduce a small degree of misalignment. The tripod has its own level to compensate for uneven ground. Mounted on top is the rifle clamp — a HOG Saddle — which holds the rifle chassis. In my case, this was already introducing a very slight amount of cant. That error was then carried through the chassis, the scope mount, the Marcool attached to the rail and finally the mechanical level placed directly on the rifle.

Each interface can therefore add a small error to the one that came before it.
I started again from the beginning: chassis positioning, clamping in the HOG Saddle, scope installation and finally comparison of the different levels. Once all the mechanical references were aligned as closely as possible, I finally had a sufficiently coherent baseline against which to evaluate what the Marcool was actually telling me.
Bubble Level or Plumb Line: Same Gravity, Different Measurement
From a physics standpoint, both the bubble level and the plumb line use exactly the same reference: gravity. A plumb line directly indicates the vertical axis, as a freely suspended weight naturally aligns itself with the direction of the gravitational field. A bubble level effectively does the opposite. The bubble moves towards the highest point of its slightly curved vial and, when centred, the reference axis is horizontal — therefore perpendicular to the vertical defined by gravity.
In theory, the two should correspond perfectly. In practice, however, a bubble level does not measure “the rifle” as a complete system. It measures only the orientation of the surface on which it is sitting. If the HOG Saddle holds the chassis a fraction of a degree off-axis, if the rail introduces another slight deviation, or if the scope mount adds another tolerance, each individual level can be perfectly functional while still displaying a slightly different result.
That is where a plumb line becomes such a useful reference: it provides a direct vertical without relying on a series of intermediate mechanical surfaces. It is considerably less practical in the field, of course, as it requires enough height, time to stabilise and protection from movement or air currents. A bubble level is far more convenient, but its reading depends just as much on the geometry of the surface beneath it as on the accuracy of the level itself.

The Electronics Were Not the Problem After All
Once all my mechanical levels were giving consistent readings, I turned my attention back to the Marcool. The HY3520 allows the user to perform an electronic calibration and manually establish a new reference point.
That was when I discovered that the electronic level itself was working correctly: the problem was actually the mechanical interface between the unit and my rail.
Once tightened, the mounting plate positioned the Marcool very slightly off-axis in relation to the rail. I therefore loosened the plate and applied a small amount of corrective pressure while tightening it again in order to bring the unit perfectly into alignment. Once this had been corrected and the entire mechanical chain checked again, the readings became consistent.
The exercise ultimately proved more interesting than simply verifying Marcool’s advertised specification. It demonstrates that before blaming an electronic sensor, it is worth checking the entire chain between the ground, support, rifle, rail, optic and level itself. A sensor can measure gravity perfectly accurately while still being mechanically mounted at an angle.
As for the famous one-degree figure, the concept is ultimately fairly straightforward: approximately 1° of tolerance on either side of vertical, giving a total green window of close to 2° before the display switches to blue or red.
What About Real-Steel PRS?
Although this article is primarily based on an airsoft competition test, the Marcool HY3520 was above all designed with PRS and real precision rifles in mind.
Distances are greater, vertical corrections become increasingly significant and shooting positions are rarely as comfortable as a bench-rest setup. Barricades, bags, tripods, improvised supports and unconventional firing positions are all part of the discipline. A few degrees of rifle cant can turn a perfectly calculated vertical correction into an error that also contains a lateral component.
Once again, under time pressure, the blue / green / red system makes perfect sense. Rather than searching for and carefully centring a small bubble, the shooter only needs to register a colour and make an immediate correction.
I also mounted the electronic module on a .308 Winchester rifle and fired around twenty rounds without experiencing any operational problems related to recoil or vibration.
Then there is the price, which is almost insignificant in this environment. Compared with the cost of a PRS rifle, a quality optic and, above all, the ammunition consumed during training and competition, the Marcool effectively costs the equivalent of only a few boxes of cartridges. For an accessory capable of removing another variable so simply, it is a difficult investment to criticise.
Gadget or Genuine Shooting Tool?
In absolute terms, I would still rank this accessory well below a good barrel, an excellent hop-up system or a quality optic on the list of priorities. My opinion has not fundamentally changed in that respect: an anti-cant level will never compensate for a poorly set-up rifle.
But once everything else is already working properly, its value becomes much easier to appreciate. Modern airsoft bolt-action rifles have progressed considerably. With 0.45 or 0.48 g BBs, a properly tuned hop-up and consistent internals, engaging difficult targets at varying and sometimes substantial distances is no longer particularly unusual, as the example below demonstrates.

At that level, small details begin to matter. And unlike conventional firearms, an airsoft hop-up system makes rifle cant particularly undesirable because it can directly alter the direction in which the Magnus effect acts on the BB.
What initially looks like a niche gadget borrowed from the long-range shooting world therefore becomes a perfectly relevant accessory for both competitive airsoft shooters and PRS riflemen.
And the Result?
It would obviously be difficult to credit a competition result to a single accessory. The shooter still has to find the target and put the shot on it.
However, this level was fitted to my rifle throughout the 2026 SSC, where I eventually finished in second place with 28 points out of a possible 30, following a sudden-death tiebreak for first place.
The accessory certainly did not make those hits for me. What it did do was allow me, on several occasions, to instantly confirm my rifle position, remove any doubt about cant and, most importantly, do so without wasting valuable seconds.
And that is exactly what I wanted from it.

Conclusion
Simple, compact and instantly understandable thanks to its blue, green and red display, the Marcool HY3520 does exactly what it is supposed to do. Its value is particularly interesting in airsoft, where rifle cant can directly influence trajectory through the hop-up system, while the same principle remains entirely relevant to PRS and precision rifle shooting.
After a full day of competition use, it also taught me something I was not necessarily expecting: before trying to measure a degree of cant accurately, you first need to make sure every mechanical component in the system is actually aligned.
I no longer really consider it a gadget. It does not make the shot for you; it simply removes one more variable from the equation.
