Definition of Sniper

Sniper is already well-established term that has long roots in military history ever since invention of reasonably accurate projectile weapons. The story how “sniper” term was coined reveals the basic outline of professional sniper. As many enthusiasts know the term ”sniper” originated in 19th century when snipe was favorite game fowl in British India. The snipe is small and fast what makes it extremely challenging target. To be successful snipe hunter you needed to be expert shot and proficient in other arts of the hunter. Sniper term was therefore reflection of someone with required skills to be successful snipe hunter. When Germans employed specially trained marksmen with telescopic sights against British Army in World War II for the first time in military history these sharpshooters became quickly known as snipers. (1)

Rather appallingly snipers have recently become something of a fashion for legions of teenagers who get kicks from playing ”sniper” in plethora of First Person Shooter games. Playing sniper can be entertaining in computer screen, but competent military snipers have been and still are devastating precision weapons with immense PsyOps effect. ”Sniper fear” was all too much of a reality for those Allied troops who had to face German snipers in Normandy and beyond. Snipers will continue to operate in battlefield despite the advances in technology and are expected to play even stronger role in years to come as the face of warfare keeps changing from Cold War –type mass engagements to counter-insurgency ”brush wars” and counter-terrorism operations. In more recent times, more or less trained snipers have been negatively associated with the term sniper for the atrocities and crimes they have committed in battlefields and in civilian life. With snipers there is the bad and there is the good. Law enforcement snipers are essential tool in hostage and counter-terrorist operations where they are often credited with saving lives of hostages and police officers.

Some militaries have started to field ”snipers” in infantry squad level by issuing scoped assault rifles to best marksmen. However, these personnel should not confused to elite or professional snipers as they are more in squad fire support (”Advanced Marksman”) and operate primarily within their own squad only.

Mentality of sniper

Image

The mentality of properly trained sniper is not your average Joe or even average infantry man, rather, if one would try to list required mental characteristics of sniper it certainly should include nerves of steel, endless patience, intelligence mixed with calm ruthlessness that stays moulds into emotional balance. Mental characteristics and condition have immense part in selecting sniper in the first place.

His marksmanship and observation ability needs to be extremely high and for this unrivalled eyesight is important element. However, those qualities need to be supplemented with right mentality in order to successfully utilize them in sniper missions. Snipers are often associated with their obvious marksmanship skills, but competent sniper is mix of many qualities that allow him or her to do the job.

A sniper has special abilities, training, and equipment. His job is to deliver discriminatory, highly accurate rifle fire against enemy targets which, because of range, size, location, fleeting nature, or visibility, cannot be engaged successfully by the rifleman. Sniping requires the development of basic infantry skills to a high degree of perfection. A sniper’s training incorporates a wide variety of subjects designated to increase his value as force multiplier and ensure his survival on the battlefield. The art of sniping requires learning and repetitiously practicing these skills until mastered. A sniper must be highly trained in long-range rifle marksmanship and field craft skills to ensure maximum probability of effective engagements and minimum risk of detection. Perfection must be reached before sniper takes part in combat operations.

Sniper Training and Employment TC-23-14 June 1989, US Army

What makes sniper unique in pure warfare terms is that it is a weapon available to nearly any force and with relatively minimal cost. Snipers need minimal support and maintenance to operate unlike many modern high-tech weaponry. What is more snipers are not limited only to elimination of enemy combatants, but perform variety of missions. Snipers real mission scope in battlefield has been lost in the already mentioned games and movies that tend to show only very limited aspect of snipers mission and we shed bit more light later in this article what sniper is expected to do in real military. Often media battlefield reports small groups or even individuals as snipers as do frontline grunts that are exposed to sporadic rifle fire which source cannot be exactly pinpointed. More often than not stragglers, recon patrols or lone die-hards are cause of such sniping rather than elite snipers. It demonstrates that any individual can emulate snipers by hiding and taking aimed shots at distance, but elite snipers should be separated from this type of sniping.

There is aura of controversy with snipers that stems from their ability appear, hide and evade undetected while taking out individual combatants with lethal precision. As part of the snipers training and primary mission sniper identifies individuals that are most valuable for the enemy. These are officers, messengers, communications operators, heavy weapon and vehicle crews and his counterparts in enemy side (logically in actual situation they would be quickly short listed in snipers mind from most dangerous to down, i.e. starting from enemy sniper with riflemen being the last). In certain circumstances there is nothing that the enemy can do about the sniper since he is unseen at great distance. At best they can call in artillery and heavy weapons fire to the suspected location (as proper snipers are rare in lower echelons counter sniper is most likely unavailable with short notice). Enemy snipers are often hated and feared by the regular infantry who have to deal with them in difficult battlefield situations. Snipers therefore have always carried ”high prize value” even to extend where bounties have placed on heads of known enemy snipers. It can be argued that because of the sudden, concealed and personal nature of the elimination sniper’s closest term is assassin although in battlefield there is no such definition. But it can go long way to explain aura of sniper in short. Military lawyers have described sniper as ”legal battlefield weapon system”.

Saving the niceties and concealing military terminology, sniper’s job is to eliminate, to kill enemy combatants, with extreme precision and without remorse.

You get to the point where you start living like an animal” “ You act like an animal, you work like an animal, you are an animal. All you think about is killing."

- Chuck Mawhinney, USMC sniper in Vietnam War, 103 confirmed kills

SNIPER’S SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS

It is to be noted that snipers are often at least non-commissioned officers or even officers. This is because of their extensive training and number of specialized skills that their mission calls. It is also interesting to compare on paper the requirements of Special Forces and those of the sniper. Indeed, the requirements of sniper do not differ much from the Special Forces operatives.
Image

Marksmanship
Marksmanship of sniper differs from ordinary infantry soldier’s marksmanship by its focus on techniques to hit targets at extended ranges. Examples of these techniques are effects of weather conditions to ballistics; holding off for elevation and windage; engaging moving targets; using and adjusting scopes; and zeroing procedures. As with all sniper skills, sniper marksmanship is a perishable skill that must be practiced often. (3)

As history has shown, best snipers come from hunting backgrounds and have typically participated in various marksmanship programs.

Physical condition
Sniper missions, as perfectly described in Carlos Hatchcock’s mission to eliminate NVA general, often call for extended operations with very little sleep, food or water. To endure such missions sniper must be in outstanding physical condition, which translates to better reflexes, better muscular control and greater stamina in field conditions. (4)

Vision
Eyesight is the sniper’s prime tool. Therefore, a sniper must have 20/20 vision or vision that is correctable to 20/20. Glasses or color blindness are considered to be a liability. (5)

Smoking
Rather obviously sniper should be a nonsmoker. Smoke or an unsuppressed smoker’s cough can reveal the sniper’s position, and even as smoking is definite no-go during missions refrainment may cause nervousness and irritation, which will lower sniper’s efficiency. (6) Any nervousness or irritation during aiming process will considerably lower the accuracy of the shooter.

Mental condition
Like we talked about importance of the sniper’s mental profile, commanders will screen sniper candidates to find who can do the mentally strenuous job that needs no further explanation here. A psychological evaluation of the candidate can aid the commander in the process. (7)

Intelligence
Selected sniper candidate must have high intelligence. He must be able to learn ballistics, ammunition type and capabilities, adjustment of optical devices, radio operation and procedures, forward observation (of artillery and mortar fire), land navigation skills, military intelligence and identification of uniforms and equipment. (8)

Emotional balance
Continuing on the mental aspect, emotional balance is required for sniper to be able to operate calmly and deliberately.

Fieldcraft
Movement and camouflage are essential parts of the sniper’s skills. There is no use for sniper unless he can get into position without being detected. Modern day snipers often use ghillie suits to help them to blend into their surroundings, but still key element is to be able to move patiently, quietly and slowly as human eye is naturally attracted to a movement. Even smells and animals are to be noted as this Scout Sniper testifies:
“Nature also threw other obstacles into the scenario. The warm sun had dried the ground that, together with a lack of wind, amplified the slightest sounds made by the Scout/Snipers as they painstakingly moved through the vegetation. Birds had sought refuge from the sun in the trees and could easily be stirred by one wrong move. Even the slight breeze that did occasionally blow ran over the Marines' backs, carrying their scent directly to the enemy position.”

- “Goodbye to Romance – What it takes to be Marine Scout/Sniper” by SGT Lance M. Bacon

Image

Sniper terminology calls approach to the target as “stalk”. These often require extreme patience and bravery as real war example of USMC sniper Carlos Hathcock’s stalk of a North Vietnamese Army General demonstrates. The stalk covered 2000 meters of flat ground with nothing more for cover and concealment than grass that was only two feet high. Carlos Hathcock crawled "inches per minute and yards per hour" for two days and three nights to cover a distance that could be walked, by a man at normal speed, in ten minutes. The entire time Hathcock was moving into his FFP, enemy patrols were walking all around him. One NVA soldier even brushed Carlos' leg as he walked past the sniper hiding in the grass. On the morning of his fourth day, without having eaten any food and having had very little water, Carlos finally made it into the right spot. He found himself 800 meters from the target area. At the appropriate time, Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock fired his devastating shot, killing the NVA General. Only after having made the shot, did Hathcock exit his FFP to escape the furious search for the sharpshooter who had seriously damaged the command and control structure of the NVA units operating in the area. (4)

When it comes to the marksmanship the legendary slogan ”One shot, one kill” seems to be more of a myth than reality as veteran snipers mention taking one to two shots per target and giving ”mercy shots” to finish wounded. Typical target engagement range is up to 400 meters although in some cases engagement range can be up to 800 meters. With modern .50cal sniper rifles, like M82 Barret, the engagement range has risen to over 1,000 meters.

Shooting to such long distances require various skills that ordinary rifleman is not required to have. To be able to shoot advanced distances in various combat and weather conditions skills such as range and wind estimation. Extensive knowledge of ammunition, ballistics and effects of weather are needed

Sniper’s tactical employment

Coming to tactical scope of the battlefield commanders can use snipers in variety of roles. Because of their movement, camouflage and observation skills they can be employed in reconnaince role ahead of infantry unit. They can also provide protective screen to infantry companies and pin down enemy to buy time for main force. There is interesting example in United States Marine Corps who employ Scout Snipers that do exactly what the name indicates (recon & snipe).

Sniper doesn’t need always to rely to his rifle to make the elimination. He can also call in fire support or in some cases even engage enemy with full automatic weapon and explosives when in close ambush situation.

In order not to paint the picture of sniper being something of a super-soldier, snipers do have disadvantages. Working alone, in pair or small team sniper is often outnumbered against enemy units. Should his position be revealed and taken under fire escaping and evading much larger force can be tricky. To combat this disadvantage snipers have been provided with tactical support element of about fire team size to provide cover for withdrawal if necessary.

Sniper rear-guard, an German lesson from WWII
Germans used four to six snipers to cover unit withdrawals as snipers could remain undetected with one or two shots while in comparison machine guns or other heavy weaponry would be immediately detected.

Sniper team, an Russian lesson from Chechnya
More modern and refined tactical employment that evolved in Chechnya calls use of two snipers and five-man security element armed with assault rifles. This tactic was brought in after failed attempt to use the common two-man team (sniper & observer) that is at the moment common in Western militaries. For concealment the snipers go into position at night and leave at night and employ scouts who know the area where they have been assigned.

Snipers use night to select their position, but prepare them during the day. Preparation includes digging in, camouflaging the position, clearing lanes of fire, and improving the position.

Snipers are not together, but separated 200 to 300 meters from the ambush area while the support group sets up some 200 meters to the rear of the snipers and some 500 meters to the side. The sniper team will remain in position for one or two nights. (1)

Sniper positioning
Sniper will choose a position that he is least expected to utilize. Towers, trees, high buildings, rooftops, etc. are not utilized in combat situations by experienced snipers. High buildings and roof tops will be hit first in artillery or mortar barrage (for the same reason infantry is not supposed to use most highest floors of the building) and the old rule applies here, if you can see them so can they.

What makes sniper duel so interesting topic that it can make it to a Hollywood block buster is that this tactic is so standard that enemy sniper conducting counter sniper mission will be looking for his opposite counterpart exactly from those unlikely positions that he would use, if roles would be reversed.

Dummy positions and look-a-likes are utilized to trick enemy to shoot and reveal himself. Another classic technique from World War II.

The bread and butter of Sniper

To use professional Russian sniper’s equipment as example typical sniper carries his specially manufactured sniper rifle and assault rifle or machine pistol for close-in fighting. He also should have night-observation device, rations, flare pistol with red flare, radio, grenade, shovel and shelter halves.

Referring to previously mentioned sniper’s aura snipers do not intend to be captured as it can be imagined that captured sniper cannot expect proper POW handling. Should the sniper fail to withdraw illumination flare will bring artillery to his position and grenade will deal with the sniper and his attackers simultaneously. (2)

Snipers use only two types of rifles, bolt-action or semi-automatic. Bolt-action rifles primary advantage is less target signal in terms of reloading action and shooter can choose the timing of shell ejection.

Semiautomatic’s advantage is obviously the higher rate of fire, but semiauto rifles are less popular with Western snipers. Russian snipers have traditionally employed semiauto rifles such as SVD Dragunov, but are currently looking into possibilities of bolt-action rifles.

Calibers of rifles vary from 7.62mm to 12.7mm (.308 to .50cal) with 7.62mm being the most common. .50cal rifles such as M82A1 Barret have attained great deal of popularity in recent times as AARs are coming in from Afganistan and Iraq. .50cal rifle has trendemous advantage in range, penetration and stopping power. So much so that its classification is ”anti-material rifle” and can be used against vehicles. The longest recorded kills for M82 to are well in excess of 1,000 meters

Sniper scopes

In modern day, all sniper rifles are equipped with scope sights and have become sort of a trademark of a sniper.

Generally speaking scope mounted on the rifle allows the sniper to detect and engage targets more efficiently than he could normally do. The primary advantage of scope is focused image of the target and aiming point at the same time. Scope, however, will not make you better shooter; it only helps you to see well.

Since airsoft rifles behave very differently from real steel rifles we will not discuss the scopes in detail here. You can find additional information about scopes from the following parts of this report.

Sniper traditions

Emphasis and interest on snipers has been on on-off basis with major military powers. It appears that during peacetime sniper training has been decreased or even ignored while always during wartime sniper training has been resumed in earnest – more often than not by battlefield requirements. Certainly during wartime snipers have been always valued very highly by the lower echelon commanders, perhaps because the results are there to be seen immediately and personally.

As surprising as it sounds the powerhouse US military has been traditionally regarded weak when it comes to general infantry marksmanship and sniper doctrine. Of the various US military services, USMC seems to have the strongest tradition for snipers. The most famous US sniper is from relatively recent conflict and a Marine. Carlos Hathcock, USMC, racked 93 confirmed kills in Vietnam War and needs no introduction to any US reader. According the recent news reports US military has been stepping up efforts of sniper training and increases the number of snipers employed in conflict areas like Iraq and Afganistan.

Germans were relatively effective in sniper employment in both World War I and World War II. There is numerous stories of German snipers causing high casualties and widespread ”sniper fear” among the Allied troops after Normandy landings in 1944. Soviet Union had established nationwide sharp shooting and sniper training system in 1930s and was well prepared for sniper warfare by the time World War II started. Soviets employed sniper units as large as brigade. As a result many sniper aces could be found from the ranks of Red Army (the highest ranking female sniper is Russian).

As you can see from the first part of this sniper report the distances where real sniper engages the targets are impossible to achieve in airsoft. The maximum effective range for airsoft rifle is no more than 100 meters and even so accuracy is always hard pressed the longer the distance becomes. This is simply because of the round shape of the BB that makes its flight performance poor. Because of this it will be always balancing between power, weight of the BB and safety requirements. This combination rules out any long-range sniping that could be done with acceptable safety limits.

However, this doesn’t prevent anyone from taking snipers role in airsoft and using same basic techniques that real snipers do. The airsoft sniper has to maximize the accuracy of his rifle, master field craft and adapt new airsoft-specific tactics. Also mastering airsoft marksmanship is completely different ball game than what it is with real steels and this includes the scopes that are often designed for longer engagement ranges than what are typically experienced in airsoft.
Image
The range of elimination

You can see many airsoft snipers bragging about the longest range they have been able to get elimination or how far they can shoot with their rifles. All this is fine and dandy, but elimination is always elimination regardless of the range. Many of the WWII veteran snipers would allow targets to close on them to allow proper identification and to make the confirmation of kill more sure.

The biggest problem with short-range elimination is the high risk of getting detected with first shot and being subsequently hunted down by larger group of enemies. Airsoft sniper should be ready to escape and evade with extreme speed for this factor and always use silent rifles and have automatic backup weapon for close quarters skirmish. As a general rule, high power springs tend to cause massive operating sound compared to light powered rifles.

Finding targets

Airsoft is a game of movement and staying in static ambush position rarely brings any decent success. Unless you have big op with places that enemy will certainly need to approach, it is better to attach yourself to a larger group and position you behind the main element. As they will be engaged in skirmish you can move up to firing position and start picking out the enemy players while they concentrated dueling with the main element of your group. At least in current climate of airsoft this can be like walk in a park for anyone with sniper experience as any systematic counter-sniper tactics do not exist in fluid and confusing airsoft battles where individualism often prevails over teamwork.

Lone Wolf vs Sniper Team

While typical airsoft sniper is a lone wolf operating in-group multiplies the effectiveness of the sniper.

While it might be difficult to recruit and compose sniper team in a game or even inside your own team, if you get lucky you might be able to pair with another sniper and occasionally have one or two players willing to play security element with AEGs.

Having a sniper team allows whole new set of tactical opportunities that just scream to be utilized. As sniper is prized target being detected presents good ambush opportunities should the sniper employ Russian-type security element Typical airsoft snipers are lone wolves and this image persists with many, so you can try to bait larger enemy to ambush by firing and retreating (running all over the place with Ghillie suit will attract plenty of attention. Big Foot hunt anyone?). Depending of the size of the enemy lone sniper can ambush any pursuers even by himself.

Due to distances involved spotter/observer is highly likely to be surplus requirements and most likely will just give away your position more easily. Second sniper, like in Russian sniper team, is much more practical arrangement to have in team.

Upgraded rifle will make me a sniper!
This tends to be the general attitude everywhere and it could not be more wrong! Its the player that makes the sniper and not the rifle. Hopefully by now you have realized the great requirements those proper real life snipers have. You will need some of their skills, mental abilities, tons of practice and finally some decent team members that will help you to form sniper team.

Image

Adjustment of the gun

Make sure that you have ”zeroed” the weapon before game. This includes optimal hop up, bb and scope adjustments to have maximum accuracy at most expected range. You will be best off by adjusting any stock gun to maximum range. With upgraded guns you will need to find balance between range and accuracy while staying with power limits.
Image

Camouflage

Ghillie suit is thought to be the most professional and practical camouflage, but they tend to be expensive as ready-made products and more importantly might have wrong colors with your local terrain. Ghillie suit with wrong colors can be a beacon to find out wanna-be sniper position. Even more nasty is ghillie suit that gets stuck to undergrowth, tree oaks, etc. It can be argued that Ghillie suit will increase your value in the eyes of "sniper hunters", so if you decide to get one live up to it...

Little out of the camouflage topic, but muffling or silencing your weapon firing sound is one of the most important factors to avoid detection. There is no bigger PsyOps than shot coming out of nowhere, no flash, no sound, no nothing! Without the sound enemy players cannot pinpoint your direction unless they see the impact point and flight pattern of the BB (unprobable). Your weapon should be also camouflaged properly.

Riflescopes do protrude lens flare unless military-type scope honeycomb is utilized (this is quite rate in fact). Lens flare is classic sniper demise and not so Hollywoodish as you would first expect. Both Simo Häyhä and Carlos Hatchcock took out their worst enemies (countersnipers sent to hunt them down) by aiming to the lens flare point probably just moments before they were about to fire.

Do not use the civilian colored scope lenses that reduce the sun light, but are very easily detected.

You can also consider not to use scope at all with range being so limited in airsoft.

Position

Your position should be preferably prone position with gun well rested against gear or improvised rest. Your body should be able to be relaxed in this position for extended periods of time.

Camouflage will be applied all around and your position should be preferably in shadow. Make sure that you do not contrast against any background and that you are not in elevated position that makes you vulnerable for counter fire or flanking.

However, remember that ambush techniques rarely work in airsoft as movement of enemy is highly inconsistent & fluid. Your best bet is to get as near as possible to the enemy re-spawn area. This way you should catch any re-generated enemies unaware and frequently. Your sniping activity will lower their effectiveness and time to return to the main battle area. This will have PsyOps side effect that will probably lower their morale considerably for getting eliminated so quickly after re-entering the game and having to deal with snipers before even getting out of their resting area. Your objective should be to pin down the enemy, which will make them unable to mount strong raids out of their base area which will gain your own main force valuable time regardless of the game objectives.

Firing

Apply correct breathing technique by stopping breathing before taking final focus and firing the weapon. Do not hold your breath longer than 8 to 10 seconds as your brains will be deprived from oxygen causing your eye vision to blur.

Use correct sight picture whether or not you are using open sights or scope. With scope make sure to have your eyes a sufficient distance away from scope (but not too far) so that you will have correctly aligned and clear view through scope. If you see darkening in corner or side of the scope view it means you have incorrect position and your shot will certainly miss the aimed point.

If you have adjustable trigger you should adjust it to so sensitive position that only slightest pull of trigger will be sufficient to fire. You will keep your finger slightly off the trigger during the aiming process and just before final focus and firing you move your finger to the trigger. Pull the trigger and hold it back during the mechanism firing process. Only after the shot has left the gun release the trigger. This will allow natural firing process and recoil action should your gun have one.

Field craft and camouflage

Use face veil and gloves to hide your skin tone while concealing your head shape with anything that breaks down the familiar shape of your head or hat. One of the best solutions is to attach local foliage to your hat with wire or other attachment system.

You will not necessarily need Ghillie suit, so camouflage BDU will do fine. You can blend yourself into terrain better by attaching foliage to your BDU. Don’t put just little that will not have any effect, but only stop when you think that you have overdone yourself.

If you use scope make sure to use honeycomb or improvise extension to the scope tube to hide any lens flare.

Use burlap or camo clothing to wrap your gun. You can also paint it, but burlap or camo clothing will break the shape and blend it better to the background.

Remember the basic rules of tactical positioning to complement above techniques.

Any spot where you still have uncamoflaged skin tone visible should be covered with camopaint or dirt. For example, campfire ash will be excellent for this.

"Hunter"

It is advisable to get lot of night games under your belt in where you operate alone ”hunting” the opposition one by one. Don’t go for full automatics and easy elimination, but instead develop your stalk to get close to the enemy and get some tap eliminations ("knife kill"). To do so requires you to develop your stalk skills, field craft and perhaps most importantly forces you to move slowly and silently.

Take a challenge and ask the rest of the group to play against you and another guy. Now, if you can turn the situation from being hunted to one where you are the hunter then maybe you have some qualities that could qualify you as potential candidate to be airsoft sniper.

Mastering the shot

Disregard any full autos or just use the gun in semiautomatic. I suggest you use AEG in semiauto to get more practice in beginning. Hanging around with bolt-action rifle will just see you waste useful gaming time. Improve your knowledge and feel of the BB trajectory by practicing off game and in game with semi auto. Make mental notes of your BBs, hop up adjustment, marksmanship style and weather conditions so you will start knowing what will work under different situations.

Now, when you have developed sufficient confidence about your shooting skills set up your own shooting track to investigate to which distances you can actually shoot with your rifle. With track shooting you will quickly learn the capabilities of your rifle and what is the maximum engagement range for airsoft kind of ”one-shot one-kill” tactic.

You should have by now developed in-depth skill and knowledge of your airsoft marksmanship ability that should further develop your mindset from ”spray-and-pray” to one of ”airsoft marksman”.

Airsoft sniper rifles are intended for precision shooting. "Long range" could be included in that sentence, but that would be almost a joke considering that only limited number of airsoft sniper rifles can reach considerably longer range than what normal airsoft guns can while still staying safe for gaming purposes. For airsoft to be considered true Airsoft Sniper Rifle it should be considerably more accurate than ordinary rifle and be capable of at least somewhat longer effective range than typical AEG. The rifle should be, although it is not mandatory, to be equipped with scope sight (see earlier part of this report for guidance).

Airsoft players that want become snipers have several options when it comes to the weapon selection.

1. Convert AEG into sniper rifle that can perform several roles at the same time.
2. Convert AEG into dedicated sniper rifle.
3. Obtain high performance gas operated sniper rifle.
4. Obtain entry-level spring cocking sniper rifle.
5. Obtain specially built (upgraded) sniper rifle.
6. Convert any other airsoft gun into a sniper weapon.

Obtaining expensive specialiced sniper rifle or trying to build one is time-consuming job that can easily go wrong if you are inexperienced in airsoft. Non-performing or non-compatible sniper rifle can frustrate and leave you to concentrate on getting your gun in proper shape while games go by.

In otherhand inexpensive spring cocking bolt-action rifles or simple converted AEGs can let you to get right into action. Should you not like playing sniper you can easily (and without major loss) switch back to your former role.

In this part of the Sniper Report we explore the airsoft sniper rifle selection and each rifle series main characteristics

Image

Airsoft Sniper Rifle Rules

Because of the requirement to have extended effective range it is usually expected that sniper rifle has higher muzzle velocity than what normal AEGs have. Event specific rules usually allow higher muzzle velocity for those players who intend to play as snipers.

The same sets of rules have to indicate minimum range from which the sniper is not allowed to fire anymore. In some games the minimum engagement range does not exist, but instead the muzzle velocity limit is lower. It is not common to see games where snipers have not been allowed any special limits and this is in fact fair towards the other players. Some are not too keen to play in same field that contains inexperienced teenage sniper with 170m/s (561 FPS) rifle. This kind of heavily upgraded rifle (in addition probably loaded with heavyweight BBs to keep the BB trajectory at least somewhat stable) is dangerous from close ranges and even if rules would dictate e.g. no shots from less than 20 meters, inexperienced sniper might fire from under this range when under stress or accidentally discharge his gun within danger close.

As BB weight reduces the muzzle velocity BB weights are also to be regulated by game rules. Even as the muzzle velocity lowers the impact power increases with the projectile weight. This impact power is defined in Joules. While Joule limit is still relatively unknown outside Japan for last several years 1J limit has become strong standard in Japan. For reference normal AEGs typically have impact power of 0.7-0.8J with 0.20g BBs.

ImageNOTE:
In some countries upgraded airsoft guns that have high muzzle velocity might require license and injuring someone with high powered airsoft gun (even if it is in gaming situation) can be in violation of law. Check your local situation before even considering high powered airsoft sniper rifle...

Model and manufacturer differences

Perhaps the biggest question for airsofter, and rightly so, is the effective ranges of airsoft sniper rifles. With many different models, operating systems, upgrades and manufacturers the differences in rifles are tremendous.

Because of this we took selected stock airsoft sniper rifles to our now familiar effective range and accuracy test. Like we did with AEGs, the tests will be conducted in two phases with first being for stock rifles only and second for upgraded guns.

Image

AEGs are widely available, relatively affordable and customization parts and information can be easily found. High rate of fire allows quick follow up shots and possibility to fight off numerous enemies. If you choose to keep your AEG muzzle velocity low (within standard rules and that is excluding the special limits for snipers) you can easily convert from sniping role to one of regular infantry even during the game and take on variety of missions. Good AEG with slight accuracy upgrade and scope sight can be enough and for some players perhaps even the best choice when it comes to sniper rifles. There is in fact specific role for you to play with an AEG that is equipped with scope.

Airsoft Player Role: Designated Marksman / Squad Level Sniper

Image

This is fairly new role to play in airsoft as it has been recently introduced by few Western militaries like United States and Sweden. One of the more better marksmen in the infantry squad is issued otherwise standard assault rifle, but with scope sight. His job is to act as integral sniper for the squad. As the squad has machine gun and anti-tank launcher equipped soldiers adding sniper to squad improves the overall firepower of the squad. Chechnyan fighters demonstrated the effectiveness of tank-hunter teams with similar weapon layout. In the Chechnyan doctrine sniper’s job is to pin down the enemy infantry while RPG-equipped fighters destroy the accompanying armor.

In airsoft squad sniper can be called by squad leader when situation requires sniper specific tasks such as sniping, screening, recon, pinning down larger enemy force, delaying, rear guard, etc.

What's the point when many players already employ scopes in their AEGs? You might have scopes in all of the team's AEGs, but the point of squad sniper in airsoft can be improvement of tactics, team integration and roleplaying.

Sniper Sample: US military Squad Advanced Marksman

US military Squad Advanced Marksmen (SAM)can be found from United States Marine Corps units. SAMs are equipped with Colt M16A4 and Trijicon Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight (ACOG). ACOG sights are interesting optical sights which have been specifically designed for M16 family and deserve closer look

Feature: Trijicon ACOG sights

Image

ACOGs are internally-adjustable, compact telescopic sights with tritium illuminated reticle patterns for use in low light or at night. ACOGs utilize both tritium and fiber optics to collect ambient light for illuminating the reticle in low-light situations. During daylight the reticle is black and tritium-illuminated red or amber during the night. According to Trijicon the ACOGs combine traditional, precise distance marksmanship with close-in aiming speed. ACOGs have been found to be extremely rugged and effective in combat conditions. What is note worthy is that the use of iron sights has been accomodated with ACOG sights when M16 carry handle is being utilized. TA31 ACOG retails at $1,195.00 which is often more than the gun itself.

Several airsoft part manufacturers are now offering replica ACOGs in non-magnifying dummy role and with simple magnifying optics which might be sufficient for airsoft player's requirements. Real ACOGs reticle is quick to aim in close range, but has four power magnification for long range. The field of view at one hundred yards is about thirty-seven feet.

On a downside AEGs have loud operating sound and time lag from trigger pull to round exiting the gun is long (except the PSG-1). Power customization is limited due to gearbox durability restrictions. Operating sound can be reduced with silent head set (i.e. Systema’s), certain motors (i.e. EG1000), low voltage battery and by equipping the gun with silencer. When selecting silencer pay attention to its integral design as that is the key how much it will actually silence the gun.

All in all, electric guns make average sniper platforms that are more suited to multirole use.

Sniper Level: Beginner/Intermediate
Role: Multirole capable! Sniper/fire support/riflemanImage

Marui G3 SG-1 is still popular gun for many beginner or intermediate snipers since it can be used in dual role of regular assault rifle and sniper rifle. As G3 SG-1 was specifically developed by Heckler & Koch for sniper use it has more pull for airsoft snipers than what other AEGs do. M120-upgrade with emphasis on accuracy would still allow fighting in most skirmishes although CQB-should be ruled out.

G3 SG-1 is the last remaining variant of Tokyo Marui’s Heckler & Koch G3 AEG-series. This is essentially same as the A3 and A4 variants, but with bipod, sniper’s cheek rest and EG700 motor.

With G3 SG-1 you can easily fight off straight-on engagements with enemy infantry although most likely stock or lightly upgraded G3 SG-1 will be outperformed by high-performance bolt-action rifle.

The question of upgrading is more easier and affordable in G3 SG-1 than what it is with more complex sniper rifles. You can use all custom parts that are made to AEGs, since G3 SG-1 has common Marui gearbox. As G3 SG-1 is of older production and design, it does not have field takedown mechanism and has proven hop up mechanism (one of the best that Marui has made). It also boasts long inner barrel – a another important factor for achieving more effective range and accuracy.

All in all, not a bad choice for snipers who want that extra firepower and flexibility.

Stock Effective Range: Up to 40 meters (132 feet)
Need to upgrade: Slight
Cost of accuracy upgrade: Between $80-120
Cost of high power upgrade: Between $100-250
Upgrade limits: Highly limited because of the gearbox

Heckler & Koch developed PSG-1 in 1980s together with elite special forces such as German GSG-9. The rather fancy looking PSG-1 was not intended for military use since Heckler & Koch developed G3 SG-1 and the MSG-90 for military sniper rifle market.

PSG-1 is one of the most expensive rifles in the market (both airsoft and real), but at least in its airsoft version this is understandable once you see the rifle by yourself. PSG-1’s ergonomically shaped pistol grip with adjustable palm stop has been included in Marui’s version. One of the major features is not correct and that is the scope sight, which is Tasco 4 x 40 in Marui version. Real PSG-1 uses Hendsoldt 6X42 telescope sight with illuminated reticle. Of course, by using different scope sight the overall price of the gun have been made reasonably affordable.

Interestingly Marui made new gearbox for PSG-1 that has unique feature of stopping the piston in cocked position, so there is no time gap between trigger pull and actual firing of pellet. This feature and gearbox version has been unique until very recently (it appears KSC is mimicking this feature in their upcoming HK33 electric rifle). Muzzle velocity is slightly higher in Marui PSG-1 than what it is in the normal AEGs (90m/s (297 FPS) with 0.20g BB) with the exception of Steyr AUG. PSG-1 can be fired only in semiautomatic mode, but can be converted to full automatic. It can also take G3 series magazines in addition of the PSG-1 normal magazine.

Regardless of the slightly higher muzzle velocity effective range & accuracy is not sufficient in stock condition for long range sniping, so you will need to customize this AEG to go beyond 50-meter effective range.

PSG-1 gearbox can take stronger upgrades than what Marui’s other gearboxes can, but it is recommended not to go any higher than 200% upgrade for durability issues. Systema is selling Full Tune Up Kit for PSG-1 with 300% spring, but this can be easily converted to 200% with simple change of main spring.

One problem is the scope that is included in the gun as it is integral and not necessarily among the best there is.

The finish of exterior parts is high although most parts are plastic and with such quality details this gun gives a feeling of more refined sniper rifle. While not your typical military sniper rifle, the first image what we get is one of German GSG-9 or any SWAT-type urban special operations force. Marui is selling bi-pod as option part and is recommended item, as this gun is very long. Keep in mind that with gun of this size you are bound to give significant target signal especially as you will have integral scope and possibly bi-pod.

Nevertheless, PSG-1 is one of the most advanced looking sniper rifles there is and is perfect with SWAT-type outfit.

Stock Effective Range: Up to 50 meters (165 feet)
Need to upgrade: Slight
Cost of accuracy upgrade: Between $80-120
Cost of high power upgrade: At least $220
Upgrade limits: Somewhat limited because of the gearbox

Image

Gas rifles are less reliable for sniping as the temperature heavily influences their performance. Because the temperature affects the gas pressure anything below 20 Celsius will have very negative effect on the performance of the rifle. Under 10 Celsius most gas guns will cease to operate properly although green gas can help in this problem to some degree.

Some of the gas rifles are very powerful even in stock condition (in excess of 120m/s (396 FPS) with 0.20g BB) and make excellent sniper rifles under right weather conditions.

Generally speaking gas powered rifles are easy to upgrade, but the problem is that not so many custom parts are made for these rifles and the ones made are not so widely available as in case with electric guns.

Gas rifles tend to be relatively quiet and can be muffled more with use of silencer.

Image

Spring cocking rifles offer some of the best choices in sniper rifle selection. Spring cocked airsoft snipers are extremely quiet and are usually very affordable. Easy to use, they make perfect entry-level gun for those who are willing or interested to re-build their rifles. Because of their single shot feature spring cocking sniper rifles require adequate skill from players to be used effectively in airsoft ops. This is because of the necessity to hit targets with a single shot.

The great thing about spring guns is that they tend to force the player to concentrate on the tactics, camouflage and movement instead of just relying on firepower. If you want to talk about real snipers, then go for the spring cocking rifles and start improving your non-gun related skills.

Versions:
VSR-10 PRO SNIPER, Japan retail a. $175 (imaged in bottom inset)
VSR-10 PRO SNIPER WOODSTOCK (Real Shock), Japan retail a. $175
VSR-10 PRO SNIPER G-SPEC, Japan retail a. $225 (imaged in top inset)

Sniper Level: Beginner / Intermediate / Advanced
Role: Sniper

Image

Marui’s VSR-10 series have quickly proven to be excellent sniper platforms and this is hardly surprising, as it was known in Japanese circles that Marui’s Hop Up system would allow Marui to create accurate rifle. Stock VSR-10s can take out man-sized targets in excess of 40 meters (132 feet) and have reasonable muzzle velocity of 89m/s (293 FPS) with 0.20g BB.

All VSR-10s are constructed externally from plastic while inside construction is from aluminium. This makes VSR-10s very lightweight, perhaps even too much of a lightweight. Any hardcore sniper will feel the rifle is too toylike in both weight and overall atmosphere (VSR-10 is imitated from M700, but close look reveals toy air gun).

However, its performance is flawless and for its ease-of-use it is also idiot-proof. Inexperienced airsoft player will be able to use it to the maximum effect with little or no previous experience. As trigger pull and hop up can be adjusted with minimum effort the gun is easily tuned to personal preferences of the owner.

Aluminium bolt is very quick and smooth to operate and this allows high rate of fire. It also faciliates quiet re-loading, if that is required.

Image

Bolt-action handle has been developed in "G-SPEC” standard in apparent effort to have even faster reloading time. It definitely looks futuristic, but that is not exactly issue since the whole VSR-10 series is fictional. Another major change in G-SPEC is the trigger, which has been lengthened and repositioned more towards the front.

In G-SPEC version both Marui VSR mount base and sling swivels are issued as standard.

G-SPEC silencer fits straight to the barrel threads and muffles the already quiet VSR-10 to the point that it is impossible to hear the firing sound in gaming situation. Even in completely quiet area you can’t hear the firing sound to more than several meters away.

With decent numbers of custom parts coming in the accuracy and range can be soon improved to previously unknown levels. Marui's custom hop up chamber and accuracy barrel are promising since the accuracy in current level is already quite good. It is unknown at the moment how power customization will affect this rifle, but as we know it has better hop up unit than most other sniper rifles out there. Potential exists for VSR-10 to be a serious sniper rifle. Maybe not for its looks or feel, but for its performance.

If you want realistic atmosphere you will not be going for VSR-10, but if you are all for practical performance and best bang for buck then Marui VSR-10 series cannot be overlooked.

PROS
* Affordable
* Silencer is big bonus to a already quiet rifle
* Reasonably accurate in stock condition
* Easily adjustable trigger and hop up

CONS
* Unrealistic atmosphere
* Very lightweight

Stock Effective Range: Up to 40 meters (198 feet)
Need to upgrade: Slight
Cost of accuracy upgrade: Between $80-120
Cost of high power upgrade: Between $50-200
Upgrade limits: Almost none

Maruzen APS series
In this category there is the most choices when it comes to the weaponry. Maruzen has been offering their APS-series for decade at the time of writing this and APSs are still regarded as one of the most common platforms for sniping. APS was originally developed for short and medium range air gun competition shooting and therefore can put shoot very tight groupings in short range.

Although accurate in short and medium distances APS series is hampered by their poor hop up and many players have resorted to replacing this hop up unit with Marui’s counterpart. Now that Marui has released their VSR-10 series with Marui’s acclaimed hop up there is some serious competition for APS.

Classic Army M24 series
As with many other CA guns the jury is still out there whether or not CA M24 is viable option for sniper rifle. PDI M24 (OEM order with Classic Army) was pulled out of Japanese market for its poor quality and re-introduced some time later. Despite this damage was done and it is little seen these days.

CA has released various versions of its rifles the current being version II (you might want to check with CA if this is still the case).

Marukoshi Super 9 PRO
Other spring cocking rifles in the market are various low-end rifles and more high-end and highly traditional Marukoshi Super 9 PRO. Marukoshi’s rifle has been in the market even before many of the current airsofters were born. It is still around and new ones are being manufactured from time to time (at least the last time we heard). It is not fancy, but will do the job and incidentally the price is same as Marui’s VSR-10. The reason why Marukoshi Super 9 PRO is still around is its easy & heavy upgrade capability. Some of the Japan old-school still prefer this rifle to the newer ones.

Sun Project rifles
SP has been making M700 and M40 series for long time, but few people use them in their original condition. Only few serious Japanese retailers carry them and even then, they are completely re-built with only few original inner parts remaining. The interest to re-build these rifles comes from their external realism and the fact that no one has been making same rifles until recently (Tanaka introduced M700 sniper rifle series).

The main point of SP rifles is their beautiful finish and external quality. Performance wise they need to be re-built.

SGF M82A1 Barret
This is the same massive .50cal rifle that you can see in many of the photographs of this report. This steel-made heavy-duty sniper rifle is spring cocking blowback rifle with .50cal replica shells. See the review of this rifle for details.
