Some special forces in United States of America, like SEAL, were seeking large caliber rifle in same period, but US military were not interested semi-auto sniper rifle, still prefer bolt action single load McMillan M88 rifle. During Gulf War in 90’s, US army purchased few M82A1 for experiment, and USMC also purchased M82A1 in the same time with their scout / snipe teams for “anti-material” purpose. Powerful and long range weapon like this, could destroy enemy’s communication equipments, vehicles, oil depots, bunkers, low altitude low-speed aircrafts, helicopters, and high valuable facilities in long range, even doing a good job in mine dispel operations. Such successful operations have changed the thought of US military. Therefore one after another, including 100 units for US army, 32 units for air force, 40 units for USSOCOM, were purchased. Because the excellent job M82A1 can do, other nations like Sweden, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Greece, and Saudi Arabia, more than 40 nations adopt it for their military / police units. After battles of Desert Storm, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Iraq, it was officially adopted by US army as M107 long range sniper rifle (LRSR) in August 2003.
Evolution of M82 series
Since M82 released in 1982 and improved in 1986 as M82A1, there are several changes in following 20 years. Early type of M82A1 had cylinder muzzle brake in his appearance and single column holes in his bipod. Mid-term type of M82A1 changed muzzle brake to V shape for better performance. In Golf War, another variant of M82A1 had two scope mounts welded together to accept longer scope rail. After that, two column holes bipod became final style for mid-term type. Newest M82A1 is similar to M107, but without rear grip and monopod socket, no spiked feet on bipod as well.
